Rockton Pelican Fest
May 17, 2025 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
The 5th Annual Rockton Pelican Fest celebrates the return of migrating American White Pelicans to the Rockton area, Nygren Wetland Preserve, and the Rock River. The event also promotes the local retail shops, eateries, and arts and culture of the historic Village of Rockton, Illinois. This free family-oriented event is presented by the Village of Rockton, JR Finally Art Studio & Gallery, Natural Land Institute, and Sinnissippi Audubon Society.
Throughout the festival, free shuttle bus service will be provided from downtown Rockton to the Nygren Wetland Preserve, at 3714 W. Rockton Road. The 721-acre preserve consists of prairies, woodlands, and wetlands that attract a variety and abundant number of bird species, including migrating waterfowl and songbirds. Visitors will be met by a knowledgeable volunteer to talk about birds and other wildlife, with free guided walking tours starting at the Wildlife Outlook.
Families and individuals will be able to explore historic downtown Rockton, local businesses, restaurants, and outdoor vendor booths, participating in activities, and attending lectures about birds and other wildlife. Lectures include bird photography, nesting Peregrine Falcons, and how prehistoric birds reveal insights to today’s birds. Those lectures will take place at Talcott Free Library and Rockton Village Hall, across the street from each other at Main Street and Blackhawk.
At Rockton Village Hall, a presentation will take place by Hoo Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Center featuring a live American White Pelican.
Especially for birders: don’t miss the Early Bird Walk at 7:30 a.m., meeting at the Nygren Wetland Wildlife Overlook, presented by Sinnissippi Audubon Society.
