I am trying to figure out why I have no hummingbirds this year when most years I have many. I expected it was due to spring storms. It was interesting to find this article showing that migration paths for song birds are not the same from year to year.
Last year I had more song birds in the spring than every before. My mother kept a book with all the bird she saw over the years with the dates and I had birds she hadn’t seen since the early 90’s and some she had never seen. This year I stocked up on various seeds but there have been almost no birds.
We live in an agriculture area and I worry about all the chemicals used. Farmers are proud that ‘there is nothing in their fields that don’t belong there’. They are removing shelter belts (“trees are weeds”) and spraying all insects and weeds. The equipment is so efficient that they leave almost nothing behind.
Is there any wonder why birds are in trouble?
Thank you for researching and sharing the good information.

I thought it could have been greatly enhanced
with maps showing flight patterns.

I’m not a fan of long-winded written articles.
I’m a visual person. I like to see, interspersed,
in the article, photos, illustrations, and maps

Where would I find a list of the species in the West/ Central/ Eastern migration groups? thanks!
