Plenty of Pear trees here in Kent, and Red-legs often forage and sometimes nest in orchards, so perhaps it is not too fanciful!

Or were merely looking for the name of some bird that fit well with “pear”. It is OK nowadays because, in Michigan at least, ruffed grouse, which roost in trees, are often called pats or partridges.
